Afterschool Spotlight: CampUs, The After-School All-Stars Las Vegas

The After-School All-Stars Las Vegas, in collaboration with UNLV’s Center for Academic Enrichment & Outreach, held a very successful dropout prevention and transition summer program this year called CampUs Las Vegas. This was the third year that the program was executed locally, but the program was modeled off of the National After-School All-Stars pilot program in Southern California in 2010.

Eighty students participated in CampUs that included unique experiences for these youth that included staying in the dorms for six days, eating at the dining halls, and participating in lectures and presentations from ASAS staff, college students, high school mentors from feeder schools and local community leaders. The focus of the program was to help participants transition successfully into high school and expose them to the fundamentals of college life, how to fill out college applications, and what it’s like to live on a college campus. The After-School All-Stars Las Vegas program worked with local partnering schools to identify participants going into ninth grade that could benefit from this unique experience.

The After-School All-Stars Las Vegas program has been in the Las Vegas Valley for 18 years. Their programs span 13 elementary and middle schools, and focus on Academics, Enrichment and Health & Fitness programs.
